ABOUT ME

My journey started when I was in grade 10 and took an introduction to communications tech course. I learned how to hold a camera, shoot with vision, lighting set ups, and how to edit in photoshop. I pursued photography specifically in grade 11 and began to create photographs I never thought I could pull off. Now, in grade 12, I have learned how to express myself through my photography and create the artwork I always imagined in my head.

LOVE

In this photograph I have model, Kirstin Copeland, posing as love for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." When you think of love, what is the first color you think of? Pink! The strongest part in this photo is the clarity of her eyes while the weakest is I look back and see the bubblegum doesn't suit my theme. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

HAPPINESS

In this photograph I have model, Rebecca Pyman, posing as happiness for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." What color better to represent happiness then yellow? It's the color that brightens on your face when you smile and the color that shines on your face in the sunlight. The strongest part of this photo is how I've captured her smile with a natural halo effect behind her to create a sunlight mood. One challenge of this photo was getting her makeup to sparkle to reveal gold instead of yellow. But a beauty dish fixed that up. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

SADNESS

In this photograph I have model, Michelle Bedard, posing as sadness for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." You know the expression, "feeling blue?" Well Michelle is "feeling a little blue." in this photograph too. The strongest part of this photo is how I got Michelle in blue makeup with a teardrop to really bring the essence of sadness into it. One weakness I could've fixed is gotten her to wear blue as well. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

ENVY

In this photograph I have model, Alesha Manning, posing as envy for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." Alesha really brings out the greedy goblin in this photograph with her attitude like glare. One weakness in this photo is that it has a wooden backdrop while the rest of my photos have a blank backdrop. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

ANGER

In this photograph I have model, Austin McGruthers, posing as anger for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." For this photo I stood up on a chair so that when Austin tilted his eyes up at me it added fury to his stare. My biggest challenge with this photo was being able to get the background red while still using a light to keep his face from being pitch black. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

CREATIVITY

In this photograph I have model, Taylor Thorburn, posing as creativity for my project "When Colors Meet Emotion." I chose a purple set up with pink and blue painted across her face to express the aesthetic of pastels as well as to show that just because it may not look normal, that creativity doesn't HAVE to be normal. A flaw in this photo is that I don't have my model perfectly in the middle to show off rule of thirds. This picture set challenged my skills in lighting set ups. I kept my set ups bright and pastel to stick with my theme.

In this photograph I have model, Austin McGruthers, posing for a portrait in a fall, outdoor setting. The orange tones from the leaves on the ground give off a warm aura on Austin's face to make this photograph seem upbeat and happy. I have selected this photo as one of my top 6 photographs because it was my first photograph I had taken that I felt proud of.

In this photograph I have model, Page Graycliff, posing for a portrait in a studio setting with a black backdrop. My favorite part about this photograph is the gleam in his eyes from the lights. I used a silver reflector to spread the light across his face. During this photo, I was in a Computer Tech course and had never used a fancy camera such as the ones in my schools photography room. I have picked this photograph as one of my top 6 because it was the first photo I had ever taken on a camera that wasn't my phone. This was the moment in my life where I discovered the magic of photography.

This photograph was my first attempt at a water droplet photo. Don't be mistaken, it's not as easy as it looks. I spent countless hours retaking this photo over and over again before I had the perfect one. Most people prefer to get a photo of the droplet themselves, but not me. This ring of water caused by the droplet hitting the water is called a "crown." A challenge I had with this photograph was to get the drip kit programmed to make the water look like the crown. I picked this photo as one of my top 6 because I find the colors incredibly hypnotizing. With the mix of red and black and light peering through as white that gives the water a glass like look to it.

This photograph was another one of my "first attempts." I had an incent propped up inside a glass so that it'd appear at an angle in the bottom left corner of my photo. I had many challenges when it came to smoke photography. After countless, frustrating classes of trying to light my smoke from the front, I was informed that you have to light it from the back. After that problem had been resolved, I ran into another one. I had to wave my hand around to try and get the smoke in the perfect position for the photo. On top of those issues, I had to try and get the shutter speed fast enough without the mechanical door shutting and being in half my photo. After all of my challenges, I've had a fantastic outcome. I chose this as one of my top 6 because it is my most aesthetically pleasing photograph.

In this photograph I have model, Taylor Thorburn, posing for a portrait for my "When Color Meets Emotion" series. As shown in previous photos, Taylor is representing creativity with her purple theme and abstract makeup. I chose a pastel purple backdrop to match up with the dress she has on. I chose this as one of my top 6 because I find it filled with such calming vibes. Purple is one of my favorite colors and creativity had a gigantic meaning behind it for me as a person.

In the photograph I have mode, Kirstin Copeland, posing for a portrait for my "When Color Meets Emotion" series. Kirstin represented love with her messy pink buns and large bubble. Her white shirt shows a subtle softness as the pink to white backdrop gradients into each other. I picked this as one of my top 6 because it was the first "keeper" my photography teacher chose. A keeper is a weekly selection of his favorite photographs. I feel honored to have gotten one.
